There's Magic in the Music

You probably already guessed it, but I went to visit Destiny tonight. I'm very thankful to say she is very much improved compared to how she was the last time I saw her. Though she responded some before, she was still sorta vacant...probably still somewhat doped up from sedation meds and still dealing with fluid on her brain.

She was not at all vacant today. While she still has miles to go in terms of recovery, she's also come miles from where she was. She's responding to some cues, getting frustrated because she's wanting to respond to some things but doesn't have alot of control of her arms (or anything else for that matter) right now. She's not very verbal yet, so I didn't get any singing or noise-making tonight. Just grins galore, which made me feel worlds better in terms of her alertness and possibly even recongition. I'm still using songs she knows, trying to trigger those memories. I've also added a whole box of tricks...frog puppets and Pooh puppets and Speckled frogs on a log and shakers and so on. I'm not sure if the academic memory is there, it's difficult to say just yet. But I know she knows at least the Butterfly Song (which is the link in the title, click if you'd like to hear a snippet) because her mom was out of the room when we sang it, and when she got back she asked Destiny if she missed the Butterfly Song. That got an immediate nod of the head yes.

So there's memory there. And I *have* to get this kid a tambourine or a drum set. Apparently she has been collecting musical instruments the past two years. I wonder who might have influenced her to want things like that ;) :).

Anyway, I'm feeling very hopeful and very positive. Keep praying guys. And I'll leave you with these lyrics from said Butterfly song:

If I were a butterfly
I'd thank you Lord for givin' me wings
And if I were a robin in a tree
I'd thank you Lord that I could sing
And if I were a fish in the sea
I'd wiggle my tail and I'd giggle with glee
But I just thank you Father for making me
Me

For you gave me a heart
And you gave me a smile
You gave me Jesus
And you made me Your child
And I just thank you Father for making me
Me

You can play the MP3, you can print the lyrics ...

... but it's just not as fun without the hand motions! Seriously! So I'm just gonna sit here and sing and make hand-butterflies. Don't try to stop me.

Hey, I need to learn those motions!!! Destiny probably knows them. :) As for me picturing you sitting there and doing them...

...I totally can see it. ;) :P

Is there really a Top 10 Baptist Children Choir Hit Parade? ::laughs:: I just get this vision of a bunch of kids on Soul Train or something.

Ooh, I wonder if I Am a Promise is on there? ^_^

Incidentally, the secular version of The Butterfly Song is pretty lame ... just doesn't sound right when you go changing the lyrics all around.

Ok, that secular version of the Butterfly Song immediately lends itself to some REALLY awkward potential conversation topics. I can just hear something to this effect coming from my older 2s and 3-year-olds:

"Ummm, Ms. Carrie...what does this song mean about my parents making me? How did they do it?"

(insert teacher answer: Just ask your mom and dad, so THEY can figure out how to answer instead of me...)

And I bet "I am a Promise" might be one of those top ten songs.

The sanctuary choir at church is preparing the "Sunday school songbook" as a special. It has the butterfly song, the I am a promise song, I'm in the Lord's Army, and my personal favorite...... I am a C-H-R-I-S-T-I-A-N.

Did either of you go to GA camp and sing those songs or was I the only one subjected to summer Baptist Brainwashing?

Girls in Action, Girls in Action
Mission study and mission action
Praying, giving money so
The world may know of Jesus' love...

Eh. GAs wasn't bad ... I kind of liked it. Think of it as Girl Scouts with more music and fewer cookies. ::grins::

How about this one,

"I'm a GA cutie cutie pie!
And I'll be one till the day I die!
There's no doubt about it,
I just want to shout it,
I'm a GA cutie cutie pie!"

It's like we were all in a Baptist sorority or something....

The way I see it, this could be anywhere from truly enlightening to completely pointless and stupid.

Anon, since you have to be "anonymous," how cool could you really be?!? ;) :P Kate is the only one I recall having a cool blog. Oh yeah, and Mr. Bear. :)

As for GreenDay, yeah, they rock.

And you in the GA fan club are starting to scare me. I went through all 6 books of GAs and got all my badges, but I don't for the life of me remember the GA cutiepie song. And I don't think I want to either. :) ;)

I dont have a cool blog!? I am offended! :)

I have a keen memory for songs. I teach all of my kids Latin via song. Pretty effective, if you ask me.
